Favorite Apps for Cake Content

Over the years we've used a series of apps that have helped us share and showcase our cake projects and content.

In this newsletter we're sharing 5 of our go-to apps, their fees (if any!), what we use them for, as well as some tips:

1. VLLO

Price: $19.99 per year, $6.49 per month, or $2.49 per week

Perfect for: Short AND long videos

Use and tips: We use VLLO on mobile to quickly edit videos in various aspect ratios. You can edit videos for Instragram Reels or YouTube shorts, as well as the wider YouTube long-form videos. VLLO also has some nice customization features such as various filters and text designs, as well as allows you to quickly edit video clips. In the past we've used CapCut and KineMaster. While CapCut is free, this had some editing limitations and was only good for short form videos. On the other hand KineMaster had great editing capabilities, however their new version increased in price from $29.99 to $49.99 last year. Due to the changes and multiple apps, we decided VLLO was the best all-in-one at a great price!

2. Canva

Price: Free version, $12.99 per month, or $119.99 per year or $12.99 per month

Pefect for: Marketing and graphics materials, logo and digital design

Use and tips: If you're a small business, Canva is an amazing all-in-one promotion and marketing tool. We've used Canva to create content for various social channels including, posts, thumbnails, and banners. Canva also provides customized design sizing and resizing options, making it quick and easy to move from one image size to another. Canva is also very user friendly, and is jam packed with professional pre-designed font and social templates, as well as a huge library of stock photography, backgrounds, elements, and fonts. Additionally, Canva allows for uploading of your own images, saving of brand color palette, and you can even order custom prints (from books to stickers) directly from the platform at competitive rates! Check out how we used Canva to create our Gum Tragacanth product labels.

3. ibis Paint X

Price: Free or $9.99 with ibis Paint

Perfect for: Re-touching photos

Use and tips: Imperfect cake pic, no problem! This app allows you to use its tools to clean up any picture impefection. From color matching, to painting, to smudging, this app is very helpful to fixing pics. However, I'll be completely honest, this is an app that my 11 year old digital artist introduced me to and I've had to learn from her how to use it. Sometimes I need to have her make the edits! Check out how she fixed the smudge above the name on this cake below!

4. PhotoRoom

Price: Free version, $9.99 per month, or $69.99 per year

Perfect for: Removing and adding backgrounds

Use and tips: PhotoRoom removes the background of an image in one click of a button! It uses an AI scan to determine the photo object and erase backgrounds. Also, you can export the, now-transparent image, or choose from a variety of backgrounds, templates, or even upload your own background image. The free version includes a watermark as well as limites the backgrounds and resizing options. However, in case you want to test the free version, make sure to click at the top right to clear the subscription sign up page.

5. MagicEraser

Price: Free version, $9.99 per year

Perfect for: Removing and adding backgrounds

Use and tips: As helpful and quick as PhotoRoom is, there are occasions when some image backgrounds are not so easily removed. In this case I use MagicEraser. Magic Eraser is similar to achieving the outcomes of PhotoRoom, however this app removes backgrounds on a selection basis. This app provides a lot more control on what exactly you want to remove with easy-to-use eraser functionality. Check out how we updated the background of this cake picture below with just the free version of their background options.
